I happened to pick the RFT on Sunday after getting some breakfast ... to read the latest restaurant review. I did not get a chance to read it until late Sunday night.
I noticed the main article was on area smoking bans. So, I decided to take a read.
This sentence in the article caught my eye …
“Separately, the cities of Clayton, Kirkwood and Wildwood are all looking at potential bans.”
Wow ... when has this gone on in Kirkwood?
Could it be true … the Riverfront Times has better information about what’s going on in Kirkwood than the “Your Hometown Newspaper” – the Webster-Kirkwood Times?
Could it be true … Tom Finkel’s crew out scooped Scoop Corrigan’s crew?
But, most importantly as I asked in a Mailbag letter back in February …
“Is Jean Loemker with her letter trying to lay the ground work for Kirkwood to once again be the battleground for an agenda she and her cohorts need to take to legislators in Jefferson City? Do Kirkwoodians really want our community and its businesses to once again be abused like meaningless pawns and subjected to another pointless political battle?”
Well if this is true ... it looks like Jean Loemker and the rest of her well-financed, anti-smoking zealots from throughout the state are going to descend once again on our community to force their agenda on us.
Why does our community and its businesses need to be their pawns yet again?

- Where did the moniker “Joe Kirkwood”come from? – Well, I have an uncommon last name and I wanted an email address folks could easily remember. Since I am an “average Joe” living in Kirkwood, it just worked. Who is "Joe Kirkwood?" - I have been a Kirkwoodian since October 1997. I am an outspoken citizen who has worked on numerous proposals, citizen campaigns and election campaigns in the community of Kirkwood. This includes starting my own one-man campaign to defeat the 2003 ward proposal. I am former Kirkwood business owner, having been the manager and a partner in the now closed hot dog and burger joint, Frank 'N Patty's. I am a member of the Kirkwood-Des Peres Area Chamber of Commerce and the Friends of the Kirkwood Library. Last but definitely not least, I am actively involved in the non-political, hard-working Kirkwood Lions Club. Just in case you thought I was only involved in the community politically.
why this blog?
There are many reasons why I started this blog.
One reason stands out from among the rest.
I believe the community of Kirkwood deserves to hear more than one voice. There needs to be a voice that can be a counter-balance to the all too often very jaded and one-sided articles and letters to the editor we read in our local papers on issues in our community. I believe I have in the past brought a more realistic, common-sense and at times hard-hitting take on issues in Kirkwood.
It is my goal to provide postings with information and facts you can rely on. In addition, I promise to pepper my postings with the wit and satire that so many folks love to read from "Joe Kirkwood."
It is my hope you will come often to read this average Joe's information, thoughts and views on what's going on in our community.
Then, take a moment to give your comments on those postings. That way we all can have a voice in what is going on in our wonderful community.

Here are the definitions of the regularly used terms, abbreviations and posting labels used on the blog:
AlgdDis - Alleged Disenfranchised - a general term used to describe the regular accusation that is made by the core membership of several organizations or protest groups in our community. They claim they have either been ignored or victimized by one or more governmental or political systems in our community. Many in this small group of citizens make up the leadership and core membership of the following organizations: K-Fair, KA, KCCTBF, KKG and Kmail.
CUK - Citizens for United Kirkwood - the politically broad coalition of citizens formed in 2003 to defeat the K-Fair ward proposal. Also, it was financed by a wide-ranging number of citizens. CUK was successful in defeating the secretly written, poorly drafted, unfair K-Fair ward proposal in a November landslide of 3.2-to-1 with over 36% voter turnout.
F-A-B - Fairness-Accuracy-Balance - the three key journalistic principles that should be the goal of reporters and editors. It is also short for fabulous which is the kind of job our area reporters and editors do when they ensure an article on a controversial issue meets all three principles.
K-Fair - Kirkwoodians For Aldermanic Initiative Representation - the citizen group formed in late 2002 that brought the 2003 ward proposal before the voters. The group was financed overwhelmingly by only one citizen, Kate Davison-Ives, so it was not the widely supported citizen committee it was and continues to be hyped as. K-Fair was headed by Kathy Paulsen, Debra Mutrux and City Council member Connie Karr. Their proposal was secretly drafted. Yes, the folks that consistently proclaim citizens are not listened to, made sure no one else other than themselves drafted their proposal. The end result was a flawed and poorly drafted proposal that somehow gave its only two supporters on the City Council (Karr & Godi) an unfair advantage to serve well beyond the normal two consecutive 4-year terms set by our City Charter. K-Fair's unfair proposal was soundly defeated by voters in a November landslide of 3.2-to-1 with over 36% voter turnout.
KA - Kirkwood Alliance for Restoration, Preservation and Planned Growth - a citizen group formed in early 2000 by Carol Gilster after the demolition of the Robyn/Evans/Crosby home at 309 W. Washington. KA presents itself as a group that "has grown to become a proactive influence in community planning, restoration, preservation, development and growth." Its founding board members of their non-profit corporation according to State records included: Carol Gilster, Kate Davison-Ives, Ginny Garasche, Brent Vaughn, Connie Karr and Kathy Paulsen. KA's membership have been huge critics of only certain developments in Kirkwood, but especially the building of condos. The addition of more condos in our community was constantly referred to publicly as the "Claytonization of Kirkwood." Ironically, the last legal address with the Missouri Secretary of State's office for their non-profit corporation (which has been "administratively dissolved or revoked" since 2004) was the 80 year-old Vaughn house at 223 McCullough Ave., where now sits a condo. Obviously only certain developments are opposed by these folks. John Burns is presently the President of KA.
KCCTBF - Kirkwood Citizens Coming Together for a Bright Future - hard to figure out who and what this organization was exactly for. Formed in early 2008. They protested fervently, making numerous outrageous allegations about the Mayoral election following the City Hall tragedy. They proclaimed their aim was "to give the citizens a choice" in the election. Yet, they never fielded a candidate. In addition, they did not field a City Council candidate to fill an unexpired term as a result of the tragedy. So, it is hard to ascertain their real aim. Known members were Kathy Paulsen, Jane Von Kaenol and Steve Eagleton.
KKG - Keep Kirkwood Green - the oldest of the Alleged Disenfranchised groups in our community. It is an incredibly secretive organization founded by Kathy Paulsen and Debra Mutrux in 1994. The organization was supposedly formed for the “protection, preservation and enhancement of Kirkwood’s greenspace.” But, the group has been more interested in feuding with City Hall rather than really working toward their proclaimed objectives. From its inception the group’s leaders have wanted to force a far inferior “ward system” on our community. They were key founding members in 2002 of K-Fair. The only two City Council members to ever publicly acknowledge being KKG members are Connie Karr and Joe Godi.
Kmail - the emails sent out by Keith P. William Sr. and Alan Hopefl. Keith pretends that Kmail is open and available to every Kirkwoodian and it speaks for the entire community of Kirkwood. He calls it "100% Kirkwood." But, if you dare to question his statements or call him to task in what he alleges to be a “community discourse” then you are not allowed to receive Kmails. I of course dared and have been banned. So much for Kmail being "100% Kirkwood” or a “community discourse.” In reality, Kmail is nothing more than Keith’s own platform for his political agenda in Kirkwood. There is nothing wrong with that. But, he goes too far when he pretends he is speaking for our community when he goes on the attack with his Kmails. In addition, he blatantly twists issues. He shows no desire to properly research and know the facts. There is clearly no attempt to understand and grasp the facts of an issue. Also, Keith loves to hiding behind posting "anonymous statements" from alleged readers, so he can launch political attacks against those who do not follow Keith's Kmail party line. His "anonymous statements" all too often cross the line of decency and are slanderous in nature. Plain and simple, Kmail does not stand for Kirkwood Mail. Kmail stands for Keith Mail.
